In 9.21.2020, Microsoft announced that they had acquired ZeniMax, which is also the parent company of Bethesda. According to the reporter Jason Schreier’s Tweet, it costs Microsoft a total of $7.5 billion to purchase ZeniMax/Bethesda.
What’s more, Jason Schreier also mentioned some funny facts: It is three times more than the money Microsoft for Mojang/Minecraft. Bethesda and Obsidian are sister studios now, so Fallout: New Vegas 2 is actually possible in the future; Bethesda is working on two exclusive games for Playstation 5, so Microsoft is literally going to release two PS5 exclusive games.
On the other hand, according to the announcement from both Bethesda and Microsoft, after Bethesda has joined, the number of Microsoft’s studios increased to 23 from 15. All Bethesda’s iconic games will join the Xbox Game Pass. And the coming games of Bethesda will do the same as they are officially released, like the mysterious Starfield.
The announcement also said that XGP’s total subscribers has reached 15 million.
In the interview of cnet, Xbox director Phil Spencer and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella talked more about this acquisition. They said that despite Bethesda has a large size, Microsoft will treat them like other smaller studios such as Obsidian and let them work semi-independently.
During the interview, Microsoft was asked about how long does their acquisition plan will last. Microsoft responded: You can’t wake up one day and say, “Let me build a game studio.” The idea of having content is so we can reach larger communities. We’ll always look for places where there is that commonality of purpose, mission, and culture . We will always look to grow inorganically where it makes sense.
